good medicine
Feeling overwhelmed with a long list of to-dos (one of which was this blog post), which all required dedicated, focused time (which I don’t have), I woke up today feeling anxious. I knew I should pray about it. And a few times, I thought to pray about it. But somehow the first part of the day got away from me and around lunchtime, I found myself on the phone with a close friend asking for direction.
Making a pb & j with my 4 year old, phone held only with my shoulder, I rattled off the list to my friend. I then immediately asked her which thing I should focus on first.
BUT, before she could even respond, I got my answer.
Our hands on top of each other’s pressing a dinosaur cookie cutter into his sandwich, Reece stopped, looked straight up into my eyes and said, “Did I take my vitamins today?”
But he didn’t wait for my answer, he continued without taking a breath,
“Proverbs 17:22. A joyful heart is like good medicine but a broken spirit dries up the bones.”
He smiled proudly.
Life paused. I smiled too.
Then, anxiety lifted; message received. I told Reece he was a little angel, and knew in that moment that God had used him to communicate with me.
This post just nabbed the number one spot.
Let me explain.
I’d known for a while what this post was going to be about – memorizing scripture. God consistently places that on my heart.
Guess where we were going to start?
Yep, Proverbs 17:22.
I’m not suggesting it is ‘the bomb’ of all verses. But, it’s a great place to start and here’s why…
Generally speaking, kids love taking their vitamins. Reece has gummy ones and he DOES think they are ‘the bomb’.
I wrote the verse on a sticky note and slapped it on his jar of vitamins in the cabinet. He’s usually the one that reminds me to take them, but when we do, we first go over the verse. They’ll get more and more of it each time, be encouraged and encouraging! Eventually, they will knock it out of the park with address and verse. And, that is what I call some good, sweet medicine.
It’ll work great with your wee ones when giving them those liquid vitamins too. Truly never too early to start.
I also like twist of putting more emphasis on what is coming out of his mouth than going in. : )
So, there’s the background on the story. I’m supposed to write about this.
And I just realized with a slew of jumbled thoughts in a draft of what else I thought I was going to say tonight, this is it.
I’ve got more on Judy’s talk, and a challenge for us big folks coming.
But for today, it is simple, easy, and I hope like good medicine. – by Sundee McDonald
